Frequently Asked Questions
- Where do I buy Graindrops?
Graindrops is available at Whole Foods grocery stories nationwide. See our store locator to find a location near you!
- What does Graindrops smell like?
There is nothing like the smell of Koji. A few summers ago when we were doing test productions of our Koji, we sometimes had the doors of the factory open and people who were driving by would comment on the wonderful smell. It was like a field of flowers. Indescribably beautiful and sweet. We were tempted to create a great Koji perfume if we could capture it!
- What does Graindrops taste like?
One of the key signifiers of Koji culturing is the flavor umami, a truly amazing taste. If you’ve never experienced it, you are in for a treat. Increasingly classified as the fifth taste (the other four are sweet, sour, bitter, and salty), umami is characterized by a rich, rounded, full flavor that also tastes clean and refreshing. Graindrops incorporates elements of umami, sweet, and sour. The umami comes from our Koji, the slight sourness from the addition of six other active cultures, and the sweetness from the conversion of our grain starches into natural grain sugar. Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine hold that all the tastes have a different function and stimulate different organs. Graindrops’ combination of sweet, sour, and umami promote a delicious balance of taste, mouthfeel and goodness for the entire body.
- Why does Graindrops contain sugar?
Most of the sugar in Graindrops occurs naturally as the culturing process converts the starches of our five organic, gluten-free whole grains into natural grain sugar. For flavor, we also add a bit of organic agave syrup. Our fruit varieties have naturally occurring fruit sugars.
- What certifications does Graindrops have?
Graindrops® is third-party certified Non-GMO, Vegan, and USDA Organic. Additionally, the Whole Grains Council certifies that there are 22-24 grams of whole grains per serving, encouraging a healthful beverage, rich with prebiotic fiber. Graindrops® also meets or exceeds FDA standards for Gluten-Free foods. And because we really believe in healthy, holistic farms and food, the Koji we use is certified Biodynamic® by the Demeter Association.
- Does Graindrops contain any alcohol?
No. We have created our probiotic beverage to contain zero alcohol, so it is safe and healthy to drink for the whole family, children, or pregnant women.
- What kinds of probiotics are in Graindrops?
- Bifidobacterium bifidum
- Lactobacillus acidophilus
- Lactobacillus casei
- Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus
- Lactobacillus rhamnosus
- Streptococcus thermophilus (also known as Lactococcus thermophilus)
- Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis
- What is probiotic/prebiotic?
Probiotic foods and beverages are those that are rich in live and active cultures. These foods help you digest and increase bio-availiability of nutrients in foods otherwise difficult for the body to digest. Prebiotic foods are non-living but encourage the growth of beneficial cultures inside you. Think of prebiotics as food for probiotics. Because our beverage is a cultured grainmilk, Graindrops represents a source of both probiotics and prebiotics.
- What is Biodynamic®?
Our rice Koji is 100 percent Biodynamic®. We wouldn’t have it any other way. In an era where organic farming doesn’t always mean what people think, Biodynamic® farms represent a new era for modern sustainable agriculture. It is the only certified system of farming that considers plants, soil and animals as one self-sustaining ecosystem. Artificial fertilizers, chemical sprays and genetically-modified organisms are not allowed. Farmers instead use composting, crop rotation, mineral and herbal replenishment, and follow the subtle rhythms of nature to ensure healthy soils, plants and animals. Essentially, Biodynamic® farms harken to traditional methods through a modern lens—just as we use the power of traditional Koji to produce a new exciting drink.
- What does “triple cultured” mean?
In our view, it’s the only way to create the world’s best non-dairy probiotic beverage without cutting corners. The first step involves cultivating the Koji using our Biodynamic® rice. Then we add the Koji to our batch of five gluten-free organic whole grains and culture it until it is fully liquid and naturally sweet. This step releases all the nutritional components of the grain and gives it a full and round flavor. Now we have a cultured grainmilk, ready to become a delicious probiotic drink through the magic of seven strains of 20 billion live and active cultures. This is the third step in our triple-cultured process, where we take great pains to get the balance, texture and flavor just right.
- When will Graindrops be available?
Graindrops will be available for purchase at Whole Foods Market in May, 2014. Check out our blog for updates.
- What is Koji?
Koji is the artisanal Japanese culturing of rice, a centuries-old process used to create staples like soy sauce and miso. The enzymes in this culture convert starches to natural sugars, impart delicious flavor and aroma, and release the nutritional goodness of whole grain by making it bioavailable.
We use this power of Koji to create Graindrops. Culturing is nature’s original slow food and, at Graindrops, we prefer to do it the natural way. We use absolutely no liquid or industrial enzymes, preferring instead our small batch, artisan-made Koji, which takes two full days to mature. Using 100 percent natural enzymes helps give Graindrops the wonderful flavor and soul-quenching characteristics that make it the most unique non-dairy probiotic beverage in the world.
